In 2016, after an extensive and thoughtful process of training and research we launched Gwennie’s Getaways.

Gwennie’s Getaways is a charity based in Slaithwaite, Huddersfield.

Gwennie’s Getaways is committed to providing short term breaks to those with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia and their family or carers.

We provide families that are living with or affected by Dementia with a respite break at one of our caravans based at Primrose Valley, Filey and Newton Hall, Blackpool.

Going on holiday can be extremely beneficial and enjoyable for people affected by dementia and their carers.

We have the use of five beautiful static caravans, four of which are based at Primrose Valley, a seaside resort on the East Coast in Filey and one at Newton Hall Holiday Park, near Blackpool.

Each caravan is double glazed and has a full central heating system keeping it warm and cosy in the cooler months. They each have disabled access, two bathrooms and are fully equipped with the usual home comforts allowing for a comfortable and restful stay.

Gwennie’s Getaways believes that everyone should have a chance to spend ‘quality time‘ free from day–to–day concerns and to build/recall precious personal memories.

There is a significant reduction in the level of stress for the patient and carer/s, health benefits for the individual suffering the illness (both mental health and physical health), a positive impact on mental and emotional health for all family members.

A simple ‘recharging of the batteries‘ for the family. Something which most ‘normal families‘ look for on a holiday, but most families don’t have the challenges which our families have to cope with, so it is even more crucial for them to recharge their energy.

Gwennie’s Getaways has also committed to also helping those in our local area and have set up Memory Café’s at Ruddi’s in Slaithwaite on a Tuesday morning and at Longwood Mechanics on a Wednesday.
